3.4 Components. T h e lathe shall consist of not less than a bed and base,
spindle speed change mechanism,

bed shall be a stress relieved ferrous casting with sufficient strength and
r i g i d i t y to maintain accurate alignment of all the components in accordance with
t a b l e I I I . The bed shall have V-ways or flat ways or a combination of "V" and
flat ways to provide a sliding surface for the longitudinal movement of the
c a r r i a g e and to assure alignment of the headstock and tailstock. The bed ways
s h a l l b e e i t h e r c a s t i n t e g r a l l y w i t h t h e b e d s t r u c t u r e o r replaceable way
inserts,
o r a combination thereof. The bed ways for the carriage longitudinal
m o v e m e n t shall be hardened to Rockwell C-50 if integral or Rockwell C-55 if
inserted, and ground to minimize wear and maintain accuracy of alignment. Means
s h a l l be provided to lubricate the bed ways automatically or with a one-shot
l u b r i c a t i o n method.
I f a particular method of lubrication is required, it shall
b e as specified (see 6.2). T h e bed shall have a sufficient number of covered
a c c e s s openings to facilitate inspection, a d j u s t m e n t , and repair of components
l o c a t e d w i t h i n t h e s t r u c t u r e . The base shall be provided with means for
securing and leveling the machine on a foundation.

l e v e r s or dials on the headstock. T h e speed selections shall include a neutral
p o s i t i o n to allow free rotation of the spindle to facilitate speed changes and
t o allow use of a dial indicator in locating the workpiece. Spindle start and
s t o p shall be by levers on the headstock and on the apron of the lathe. The
h e a d s t o c k shall be constructed to support the spindle and gear shafts so as to
p r e v e n t deflection that would affect accuracy under full operating and cutting
l o a d s . A l l load carrying surfaces of gears, clutch jaws and surfaces of sliding
parts, shall have a surface hardness of not less than Rockwell C-48. When power
