s h a l l be able to cut either right-hand or left-hand threads regardless of the
d i r e c t i o n o f s p i n d l e r o t a t i o n . T h e g e a r b o x s h a l l be automatically lubricated.
S a f e t y clutches or other devices shall protect the feed/thread gearbox, feed
rod,
and leadscrew from accidental overload. An interlock shall prevent
simultaneous engagement of the feed and thread mechanism. A feed and thread
c h a r t shall be mounted near the gear box a s a ready reference for feed and
t h r e a d s e l e c t i o n s . A l l feed and thread selections shall be shown without need
f o r mathematical conversion. T h e end gearing shall have provision for use of
t r a n s p o s i n g gears to obtain metric threads if an inch-type gearbox is required.
3 . 4 . 8 C a r r i a g e . T h e lathe carriage shall support the apron, cross slide, and
c o m p o u n d rest. T h e c a r r i a g e s h a l l t r a v e r s e l o n g i t u d i n a l l y o n t h e b e d w a y s .
M e a n s shall be provided to maintain adjustment between sliding surfaces. A
m e a n s shall be provided to securely lock the carriage in position on the bed
w h e n cross feeding. T h e carriage shall operate in both longitudinal directions
under power, r e g a r d l e s s of the direction of the spindle rotation. Way wipers
s h a l l be fitted to the carriage wings to prevent entrance of chips and abrasive
materials between the way surfaces.
3 . 4 . 9 A p r o n . The lathe shall have an apron on the front side of the carriage
which shall contain the feed mechanism, threading mechanism, operating controls,
a n d lubrication system for the apron and carriage components. The operating
controls shall include power longitudinal and cross feeds, automatically
o p e r a t e d longitudinal feed stops, t h r e a d i n g controls, and a spindle start and
stop l L e v e r type operating controls such as the threading and feed engagement
s h a l l fully engage and disengage with smooth, positive action. The apron shall
b e double wall construction providing Inboard and outboard supports for both
ends of gear shafts. Gearing in the
