3.4.11 Tailstock. The lathe shall have a tailstock for turning between
centers and drilling operations. The tailstock shall be accurately fitted to
the bedways and aligned with the headstock spindle. The tailstock shall be
marked to indicate a zero position as aligned with the headstock spindle
c e n t e r l i n e and to indicate a set-over for turning shallow tapers without a taper
T h e tailstock shall be fitted with wipers to prevent the entrance
attachment.
and chips. T h e spindle internal taper shall be equipped for
o f d i r t , coolant,
h o l d i n g tang type tools having an American Standard Taper in accordance with
A N S I B5.10 for self-holding tapers and s h a l l eject tools when fully retracted.
T h e spindle shall have a hardness of not less than Rockwell C-38 and shall be
graduated i n increments not greater than 1/16 inch or shall have a graduated
m i c r o m e t e r f e e d d i a l f o r m e a s u r i n g s p i n d l e e x t e n s i o n . T h e spindle shall be
easily extended and retracted by handwheel to both limits of travel without
jamming. The tailstock shall be easily moved along the bedways and have a quick
a c t i n g clamp for locking the tailstock to the bed and a device for locking the
s p i n d l e in any extended position without deflection. The tailstock mechanism
a n d guide ways shall be provided with means for automatic or manual means of
lubrication.
3.4.12 Coolant system. The coolant system shall be a complete unit for
d e l i v e r i n g a flow of coolant to the tool. T h e coolant system shall include a
s u m p or reservoir, a power driven pump, and all necessary piping. The reservoir
shall have a positive means to prevent chips from entering the pump. The system

c o o l a n t system shall be compatible for use with all soluble and standard cutting
o i l s . An adequate supply of coolant shall be continuously available at the
cutting tool at all locations within the work envelope. An adjustable, flexile
o u t l e t tube shall provide final dispensing of coolant. A manually operated flow
r e g u l a t i n g valve shall be located near the tube outlet to allow adjustment of
t h e stream of coolant between off and full flow, as required by the operator. A
c o o l a n t off-on switch shall be located convenient to the operator.
3 . 4 . 1 3 E l e c t r i c a l s y s t e m . The machine shall be wired to conform to NFPA 79.
U n l e s s otherwise specified (see 6.2), each machine shall be designed to operate
o n 230/460-volts, 3-phase, 60 Hertz (Hz). U n l e s s otherwise specified (see 6.2),
the lathe shall be initially wired for operation on 460 volts. Each machine
s h a l l have a fused safety disconnect switch or circuit breaker.
An identified
t e r m i n a l for grounding the machine when it is installed shall be mounted in or
n e a r the disconnect switch. T h e terminal shall be suitable for connecting the
s i z e grounding conductor specified in NFPA 79 for the disconnect fuse rating.
T h e wiring in each machine shall have i n d i v i d u a l p o i n t - t o - p o i n t c o l o r c o d e d
w i r e s in conformance with NFPA 79. D i a g r a m s / s c h e m a t i c s shall clearly identify
the individual,
point-to-point color coded wire and wire termination point
l o c a t i o n in the electrical system.
3 . 4 . 1 4 M o t o r s . M o t o r s shall be rated for continuous duty and shall have ball
o r r o l l e r b e a r i n g s of the sealed and permanently lubricated type. Unless
o t h e r w i s e specified (see 6.2), alternating-current (at) motors shall be designed
t o operate on 60-Hz. All motors shall conform to the requirements of NEMA MG1
and the motor enclosure shall meet the NEMA MG1 requirements for a drip proof
