MILITARY SPECIFICATION
LATHES, ENGINE AND TOOLROOM
2516 AND 3220
T h i s specification is approved for use by all Departments and Agencies of the
Department of Defense.
SCOPE
1.
1 . 1 Scope. T h i s s p e c i f i c a t i o n c o v e r s e l e c t r i c m o t o r d r i v e n , e n g i n e l a t h e s
a n d toolroom lathes for use in general manufacturing or toolroom type operations
w i t h equipment and accessories specified herein. The lathes shall have geared
h e a d drive with quick change feeds and either manual shift or variable speed
headstock. T h e requirements set forth in this specification and the completed
Ordering Data (see 3.5 and 6.2) establish the Government's minimum requirements
for each procurement.
1 . 2 C l a s s i f i c a t i o n . T h e lathes covered by this specification shall be of the
f o l l o w i n g types,
s i z e s , and classes. T h e type, size, and class to be furnished
s h a l l be as specified (see 6.2).
Type I - Engine lathes
Size 2516 - 25-inch swing over bed - 1 6 - i n c h swing over cross slide
Class 1 - 20 to 30 horsepower
Class 2 - 15 to 20 horsepower
Size 3220 - 32- inch swing over bed - 20-inch swing over cross slide
Class 1 - 30 to 40 horsepower
Class 2 - 40 to 50 horsepower
Type 11 - Toolroom lathes
Size 2516 - 25-inch swing over bed - 1 6 - i n c h swing over cross slide
20 to 30 horsepower
Size 3220 - 33-inch swing over bed - 2 7 - i n c h swing over cross slide
Class 1 - 30 to 40 horsepower
Class 2 - 40 to 50 horsepower
